gas vs. disel

if buying a new superduty what is better the 6.8l v10 or the 6.4l powerstroke.

which would be cheaper, including price from factory, fuel economy, price from the pump for a person that would pull a stock trailer 40 days a year?

thanks have had a ruff descion

As you probably know diesels are more expensive to maintain, along with diesel fuel being more expensive. If you do mostly city driving and dont plan on keeping the truck for many years to come a gas model would be fine. The diesel will get better fuel mileage. If you do plan on putting over a hundred thousand miles on the truck and keeping it for awhile then a diesel is for you. After all the diesel is made with much heavier duty parts than the gasoline model. I hope this helps.

I don't know about Ford Diesels, but I know that with GM, The Diesels hold their value much better.

Welcome to the forum by the way

I agree with dieseljunkie. You will need to put 100K plus on the diesel for it to pay for itself. I am not familiar with Fords too much as far a power between the v10 and the diesel, but it should be close. Resale value is definitely higher on the diesel, but they cost $6000 or better more new so it is pretty much a wash. One pain in the butt thing about diesels is not every station carries it. Around here there are only a handful so that is something to keep in mind when planning a trip. I was driving a diesel when I first moved here and was panicing lookng for a station with my low fuel light on. If I am right the 6.4 has only been out a few years...has it proven itself yet? I know alot of people complain about the 6.0 diesel. Why did they go away from the 7.3 again??? Oh yeah too much black smoke burning through the ozone or something. Hope I haven't confused you further!

the 6.4 powerstroke if i am correct is a new model for ford so its still got some kinks in it includding a possibility for recalls where as the 6.8 v10 has been around since 1999. i know a guy with a 99 v10 and he gets 12 mpg and his only has like 45,000 miles on it. triton and powerstroke are both dependable engines though. but like the other guys said its a matter of how you use it that should determine your choice.
