JB weld on oil pan
 

Hi. I just recently purchased a 96 F250 and after getting it home and looking at it better in the daylight noticed that the oil pan had jb weld on it.Everyone is telling me that the jb weld will not hold and i need to get new oil pan.They say the weld will crack in the winter.Anyone know if this is true?Is this like emergency to get done?I know it is a big job.Thanks!

Through personal experience, I would replace the pan. I had an 82 F150 with the I6. The oil pan had rusted with pin holes. I cleaned all the grease off and used sand paper to get it all shiny. I wiped it down with alcohol, mixed JB weld up and put liberal amounts all over the pan figuring it would hold if I coated the whole bottom of the pan. I let it sit for 48 hours to cure, just to be sure. Went back sanded smooth and painted ford blue. After all that it lasted about 20 minutes before it started to leak through. What I forgot to think about when I did all of this is that the oil pan builds pressure so it was pushing out on the repair patch.

Hi,
did this 3 months ago ,my 93 f250 5.8 had 2 thru holes which I enlarged to 1/4 inch and used a mapp torch to burn away oil residue inside pan . That repair was done while 1st pan was on order . I pushed enough jb thru holes to form button ,or mushroom on inside . That repair would have lasted 1 + year ,when I replaced it . The 2nd pan was spectre brand, fit much better over new melling oil pump and into truck . All that said,replace the pan .takes 4,5 hours the first time. 2,3 hours do again when brand name pan leaked.

It's a band aid. If it doesn't start to leak from the oil pressure built in the crank case, it will from the metal expanding and contracting. Not to mention the on going rust under the JB weld

I'd be changing out that oilpan as soon as I got a chance.

What engine does the truck have? Some of those Fords have aluminum oil pans, and they can be aluminum welded if its not to serious.
