DIY : Replace PCV Valve Ford F-150

The Ford F-150http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2_bing.gif uses a PCV valve as part of its emissions control systems. PCV, which stands for Positive Crankcase Ventilation, is a system by which the exhaust runs back through the combustion chamber to make sure any unburned fuel that escaped the chamber the first time is burned on the second pass. Over time, the valve can get gummed up and begin to stick closed. If this happens, you will need to replace it as soon as possible to ensure your F-150 continues to run smoothly.

Note: Never work on a hot engine, as serious burn injury can occur.

1. Open the hood and locate the crankcase hose. Depending on the year and engine configuration your F-150, you may need to use the flashlight and inspection mirror. The hose connects to the PCV valve, which plugs into the valve cover.

2. Grab the hose and pull it and the PCV valve away from the valve cover. Depending on the year and engine configuration your F-150, you may need to remove the air cleaner housing or other components to reach the hose and valve.

3. Pull the PCV valve out of the end of the crankcase hose and insert the new PCV valve.

4. Plug the new valve into the valve cover in place of the old valve. Reinstall anything you may have needed to remove in Step 2 and close the hood.
