1989 Silverado 350 Vortex Keeps Cutting Off
 

Whenever I'm sitting idling at a traffic stop or when backing up & I stop & put it in drive it will cut off on me. It always cranks back up no problem.

Some teenage mechanic (at a fast-food drive thru) told me he knew exactly that it was a vacuum hose that needed changing out. Another guy I know that is a mechanic for Toyota that the engine needs to be rebuilt. The truck runs like a scalded dog, doesn't smoke or use oil so I couldn't conceive it needs to be rebuilt. He told me something about the vacuum in the engine & the only was to fix it is to rebuild the motor.

As long as I very lightly depress the accelerator while I'm sitting idling, it'll stay cranked. Is it a vacuum hose needing changing or a bad motor or could I just set up the idle to keep it from cutting off?

Can anyone help me or point me in the right direction please?

no check engine lite?

it all starts with fuel pressure...i'd get it checked

Nope,no 'Check Engine' light. The Toyota mechanic that works on my Toyota 4x4 told me the Chevy engine needs to be rebuilt. Something about vacuum & pressure (maybe fuel pressure - can't remember) in the engine & it doesn't know when to pump fuel to the engine or something like that. It's hard toswallow that when it runs so good.

I don't think I want to hear the answer to this question but - what are the chances he could be wrong?

Id say WRONG!!! I hope he didnt ofer to do it!! Start the truck and look and listen for a leak look at the small rubber hoses most of them are vac lines. And if you cant check your fuel pressure then have someone do it. Tell the Toyota guy not to tuch anymore of your trucks.

THANKS LOADS! I feel better now. If it turns out he is right I have a certified master machinist here in Jax that has an outstanding reputation in rebuilding motors who'll take care of it.

That mechanic told me it needed to be rebuilt. He said something about the vacuum in the engine & fuel pressure & something in the engine not knowing when to feed gas to the engine. I know more than most women about vehicles but this is way out of my league. I'm praying it IS only a vacuum hose. THAT I can fix myself. The motor sounds sweet, doesn't smoke, or need oil in between changes. I dunno. He's been a mechanic for a good many years, ASE certified etc. but no one knows everything there is.

dont do it i have had the same problem and put a new engine in and did not solve the problem.

if your still having this problem i hope you didnt have the engine rebuilt. check your coolant temp sensor at the front of the intake manifold. Also check yout tps(throttle position sensor) and you iac(idle air control). My dad's 93 suburban with a 350 had the same problem. It was the tps sensor. But if any of the above are bad it will cause that problem.

Sounds like a VAC leak to me....get a can of carb cleaner and start sprayin
