4wd drive wont engage in suburban

hey I have this 1996 gmc suburban and I tow with it the bikes to the dunes whenever I enter the dunes with the suburban I press the 4wd the 4wd light glows but the 4wd dosent even work the front tires barely spin please i need help with this

manual shift 4wd?..and it lites up....may be a broken axle

no its a automatic 4 wheel the one that activates with a button
