Finding TDC

Finding tdc on a truck on an individual valve, using ratchet on the pulley... if I crank it just a little too far to where the valve is on the downstroke, is it safe to crank it backwards to bring the valve back up?

1992 Chevy c1500 305 tbi if it matters
