2001 GMC Sierra 2500 headlights and 4 wheel drive go out together intermittently

2001 GMC Sierra 2500 headlights and 4 wheel drive go out together intermittently
My 2001 GMC Sierra has this problem where the 4 wheel drive buttons go out and when this happens the headlights won't work. Then intermittently they both cone back on and work for a while. Any ideas why these two things would be connected?
