Default Help!!

Hey guys. I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 2WD. I am currently replacing the intermediate steering shaft. The old one came off with no problems but but the new one is giving me trouble connecting to the steering gear box. I've tried pushing it down, hammering it, widening the little slit on the knuckle of the new part, and none of these methods worked. And more tricks I should try before I have to have it towed and fixed?
