New truck choice

I have owned truck over the years. I really like my 2007 Ford FX2. BUT it has the 4.6 2v motor. I put the edge on it and that has helped a little but when I tow anything of any weight it struggles. I looked at all 3 trucks and only like the Dodge and Fords... though I do like the Avalance. I need to tow my family of 5 o6 6 and at times tow a metal trailer and a 1971 cutlass.
Any options? I like the new 2009 ram (5.7) and the 2009 f150 (5.4) my wife likes the tall 4x4 trucks though I dont 4 wheel any.
I have been told none of the newer light trucks and tow like they used to due EPA and MPG issues.
Can I do any more to the ford other than CAI and the Edge? I dont want to change gears It will kill me on gas and everyday driving.
I know dodge used to be bad on stuff but what aboout now?
Any and all info is thanks up front....

The only two good towing 1/2 ton trucks IMO are the Toyota Tundra and Nissian Titan, with honerable mention going to Ford. You need to get into the Vortex Max for a GM and now your into a 3/4 ton. Dodge and chevy just don't make the needed torque down low to get things moving very well. The Tundra does everything better from getting it going to stopping it along with the best mpg's while doing it! With a 7500 pound trailer, they put the big 3's diesels up against the Tundra since it smoked all their gassers, and the Tundra also smoked the diesels. Now if you put 12,000 pounds behind them i'm sure things will start to sway towards the diesels. Diesel trucks are expensive and since your not making a living pulling a trailer, you may want to check the Tundra or Titan's out first!
