2002 GMC sierra 1500 5.3L EGR valve?

I have an '02 gmc 1500 with the 5.3L w/ auto trans. I need to know where the EGR valve is located on my engine. It's like trying to find Waldo. I found and replaced my PCV valve. And my other question is how did my fuel economy go from 20MPG or 15L/100KM to nearly 17L/100km from one tank to the next. I keep idling to a minimum and rarely rev it beyond 2500RPM. I think the Egr valve might be the culprit. At least I'm hoping it is since the PCV cost $3 and the egr costs $191!

Passenger side in front of the valve cover.

does it bolt on the engine or airbox? I've looked everywhere, I even bought a replacement EGR to see what I'm lookin for.

found out some trucks aren't eqipped with an EGR and mine wasn't either so it was all for not...thanks anyway

How do you find out whether or not your truck has it? I have a 2002 silverado 1500 with problems symptomatic (rough idle, low mpg - 15 mi/gal) of a bad egr but I can't locate it anywhere to clean it.

if you see nothing connected to the passenger side axhaust manifold then your truck does not have the egr..

railroader, thank you for you response. after doing some research i found out that GM stopped putting EGR's on the 5.3 in 2002. i hope this thread helps somebody else someday.

by the way, did you ever find out why you're mpg dropped? my truck has never gotten over 19, i was expecting better.

No it must just be winter gas. Plus a lot more
Gas stations are using up to 10% ethanol which is like burning water
Cause it gets horrible mileage yet costs the same. You can thank the
Government for that! Just keep up your maintenance. From my experience with all the vortec motors.....4.3l gets 10.5l/100km...4.8l gets 12.5l/100km and the 5.3l gets from 14.5l/100km to 16.5l/100km depending on how you drive it. Hope you know metric! And the 6.0l is putting oil companies children through college haha

The first thing i did when i bought my truck was run 3 tanks on each grade of gas and i was surprised to find that regular gas gave me the best mileage. i don't know metric but i will see if i can find a conversion rate.
