Tranny not changing in to o/d and falling out of geR

I have a 1999 Chevy 1500 extended cab four-wheel-drive. It won't go into o/d and I have to get into the gas to get it to switch 2nd to 3rd. It goes into p, r n and 1st fine. What is it? I have changed the vehicle speed sensor and idle control valve.
