gas mileage

I own a 2006 Tundra double cab 4x4, V8. I cannot believe how poor my gas mileage is!! I am getting around 14mpg city and 15.5-16 mpg hwy. I have a camper shell too. All of the usual suspects are fine, tire pressure, not towing, I do not race it or floor it ever. My friend has a 2006 chevy tahoe with the V8, 350hp and gets better mpg than I do, city and hwy driving!! Is there any changes I can make or that Toyota can make i.e. chip change, different intake etc, to improve my gas mileage? Other than this problem, the truck is stellar, but I'm afraid that if this can't be improved I will be moving into somehing different.

I bought a 2006 Double Cab Tundra on November 1st. I decided to try to use the rear window down instead of the air conditioning as much as possible (live in Florida). I did a very precise measurement of my first two tanks of gasoline, and came up with a surprising 19.2 mpg. This was about half highway and half city driving. Not as impressive as my Accord, but I'll take it.

Same here with my 2006 DC, the best I've ever gotten has been 17.2 with cruise and flat ground for 300 miles. I added a Leer cap recently and it made no difference in the milage dispite adding weight. I think it's just the nature of the beast however I think the trans could shift up sooner and it doesn't seem to go into overdrive unless you let up a little on the gas. Just things I've noticed that appear at least to me to be the culprit of such poor milage.

I got a new 5.7L Tundra DC 4X4 and get anywhere from 15.5 to 17.3 mpg, and don't drive it like a grandpa either! Hoping once i get 5000+ miles on it, itwill improve. Lots of guys getting 18's and 19's consistantly which is amazing for such a monster of a motor with a 4.30 rear end ratio.

4.30?! Toyota didn't make any bones about trying to make a good work truck did they? Course you can kiss your dreams of your gas mileage going up goodbye! That's the beauty of my truck. Small V8, single cab, step side bed(fiberglass). It get's much better than 15-17mpg.

My dad bought a tundra about 2 months ago, he's been getting close to 21mpg or even a little better. He has a 4.30 rear end but ya gotta realize they have a six speed automatic. Its and excellent truck I think.

You can't have the best of both worlds, class leading power and fuel economy! But the new Tundra comes damn close in both categories. Only truck that may edge it out in mpg's is a new chev with 3.55's, but what fun is driving that? Of course their are others with little motors out their under 5 liters that do even a little better, but once again, what fun is that! That is like buying a 6cyl mustang, really don't see the point.

Power to wieght ratio plays an integral part in mpg. I have an 87 toyo p/u that came with the 22R motor....20 mpg hiway. Young and dumb I blew up oneof the longest lasting motors Toyota made and, due to cost, dropped a small block chevy in it....25 mpg hiway. Power to wieght ratio.

And a class leading six speed trany doesn't hurt either!
