Default 1989 GMC 2500 3/4 ton PU won't start

Hi, hoping someone can help. My truck will not start. Was running fine, ran some errands got back in and it was dead. Tried getting it jumped nothing. When I turn the key there is no sound, no clicking no noise. The lights work and do not dim when cranking. The radio works too. Thinking starter but is there something else it could be?

Is the motor turning over? Try a new starter or possibly a fuel pump went out. Good luck.

My thought exactly.... but when my 90 did the exact same thing I went with the fuel pump, because it was not whining any more.

Default forgot to add something

Thank you for the replies. When it would not start I left it there over night and came back in the morning. It started up first try. I drove home and then it was dead again. Nothing, no turning over dead.

This is perfectly normal. Most '89 500s won't start.

So when you turn the key in this "no start" stiuation what happens? do you have power? Does the power go away when you try to crank? Does it crank and not fire? Is the heat shield on the starter? Is the starter been contaminated with leaking oil? It could be that the starter is getting hot and the windings are expanding and not allowing it to start untill it cools down. I would pull the starter and have it tested..

if it will run sometimes and not others then i would look at loose or corrosion on battery terminals,

if it will not start, take the cable (one at time) shake or move the cable around, then try to start truck, if you move one and then it starts you know which one to replace.

my 2000 model truck cables got corrosion up in the cable, you could not see it until I took the cable end off and crap kept falling out, clean it and all was good.
