My neighbor (who is 86) has 3 vehicles. One of which, is a 1995 Chevy Silverado, with a 350. Apparently, it leaks oil. Well, I was changing the oil for him today (he's really not that flexible anymore) and noticed, when the truck is started initially, and after the oil was changed, it knocked....LOUD for like 5-6 seconds. Then the idle loped for a bit, with no knock, then all was well.

I think he has a bearing on the way out, but don't want to scare him, by telling him without being sure. It sure sounds like it. Reckon that's what it is?

The truck has 94,000 miles.

 

my 97 suburban does the same thing on initial start up it has 214000 but then goes away I would say he has a rod bearing that is worn and should be looked at but if it goes away after start up and you dont want to "kill" him I would suggest some additive like lucas or suggest someone pull the pan and look at it.

 

Alot of the trucks will do that after an oil change especially if you don't fill the oil filter up before screwing it on. I wouldn't worry about it if it sounds good after the 5-6 seconds. I wish I had a neighbor that would change my oil!!!!!

Alright, thanks guys. I'll let him know. It's also leaking coolant somewhere, appears to be the water pump. For only 94K, that's kinda sad.

 

Not really, if you think about it. If you had two of the same shoes Right and Left. (Like most people buy) and you decided to wear them every where until they fell off. One will wear out before the other.

Same thing here, this gasket wore out faster than it should have. But it all depends on if it was built right in the first place, if it were put on correctly and then finally how he drove the vehicle. (Lots of heat cycles wear out gaskets faster, make bolts stretch and worp the surfaces)

 

Also if you think about it 15 years out of gasket isn't doing too bad! Is the glass half full now?

 

Well I understand that, it's just the lowest mileage Silvy with that issue I've come across so far.


They drive it very gently...I mean...he and his wife are in their mid 80's, so, they don't redline it and so on.

 

Well sometimes low mileage and very little driving is harder on a vehicle than driving it everyday hard. Its kind of weird but thats how it is.

 

I don't know about the driving it hard part, but yes I agree. Have you ever come across an older car that had sat for years...they can be a nightmare. I know thats the extreme, but it fits here. Regardless you still get the neighbor of the year award!!!!
