Just bought a 1 ton dually 4x4 MT 5 speed. Has trouble shifting... grinds a little when going into gears unless you double clutch or let the rpms drop alot and shift slow. double clutching helps but not much. Could this be the clutch and pressure plate or are the syncro's going out. Can the clutch be adjusted? Truck is new to me but I will try to best answer any questions about the truck/specs...

Do you know if you have a clutch slave cylinder or just mechanical levers?? Sounds like it needs to be adjusted or the slave cylinder is low on fluid or going out.

 

As far as I know it is a hydrolic clutch and has a slave cylinder.
Bought a manual today for full size GM trucks. not sure it pertains to 1ton 3500 series, but manual indicates slave cylinder is inside trans belhousing on 96 models...

 

This mornin when I went to move the truck I noticed with clutch depressed to the floor, went to put it in 1st (granny) the truck started to roll before all the way in first, clutch still depressed to floor. was also very hard to put in gear basicly had to ram it... definitly thinking its clutch related not syncros... going to check fluids right now...
Let me rephrase that ...the truck started to crawl as soon as i moved it towards gear but it was still in neutral?

 

Yeah im pretty sure the clutch is not released all the way to shift gears.

 

sounds like the slave cylinder to me

 

YEah, when it is in gear(s) it holds strong there is no slippage.
Is there a way to trouble shoot the slave cylinder? When I checked the fluid It was not low, but it was a dirty black color../ looked dirty like burnt oil very black murky... Can it be bled out? Can the slave cylinders be rebuilt of is it a remove and replace situation?

RnR and bleed it.................most of the time the bleeder screw will break off if you try to bleed an older one. You use to be able to get rebuild kits for them......but alot of that stuff has gone bye bye....so you will have to check. but you will need a brake cylinder hone to do it right.
