Default 1996 silverado Z71 tranny issue

I bought this 1996 Z71 2 weeks ago for cheap with a automatic tranny issue ... no 3rd or 4th ... would just rev out, so i bought a used one and put it in ... was good all week untill today! no 3rd no 4th .... but i figured out on the highway if you got er going fast enough and stuck it in drive i had overdrive! .... hmmmm funny ... then finally the engine light came on and all was normal ! very strange ... i stopped at the parts store and bought a new TPS and reset the codes ... no problems ???? any idea what could have happend here ? was my old tranny still good?

Very possible...it is always a good idea to have the ECM scanned with transmission problems. You might be surprised what sensors control what. At least you got it fixed!

I did go ahead and have the computer scanned at work today as i am still having an odd shifting pattern, seems to shift early at low speeds and kicks back quite hard when you romp on her!
came up that we had a code at the #2 O2 sensor at bank 2 so i will have a look and see if the lead is maybe melted or grounding out somwere ....

any other tips are greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Damn than sucks man! Not to pour salt in the wound but that is why I will never buy a used transmission. You never know what your getting. Transmissions are expensive to rebuild, but taken to the right shop will come with a warranty so you won't have to go through all that. I bought a used motor out of a "supposedly" low mileage truck from a salvage yard, went through the whole install procedure only to have a loud knock when it started. What did the junk yard say? No problem, bring it back and we'll be happy to swap it out. What about all my F'n labor. That was about 15 years ago and is still fresh in my mind!

Well..........expensive......maybe...depends on who you know...a 4L60E is cheap if you RnR it yourself...I had mine done for $750 with a shift kit for pulling trailers....The torque converter ran $130 so for less than $1000 dollars I got a new tranny......any way...my suggestion is to check ALL the connectors on the tranny and the plugs on the tranny...first but I would say it needs to be rebuilt.....but like Shamrock said you will be surprised at what controls the tranny...my money is on a problem with the truck because you have the problem intermitantly.....just my experiance as a tranny guy.....And YES the price I paid to have mine redone was regular price....no special deals.....I just had to shop around a little bit

i was told to bring the tranny back and they will give me another one ... the fellow where i got the tranny suggested i pay him another $150.00 and he will give me a low miles late 4l60e out of a 1998 or 99 chev half ton as well as the front and rear shafts as the newer trannys are supposedly 2 inches longer,
does this sound like a good plan ??

If he is gonna do that then you might as well just pay to have yours rebuilt because you are gonna have to tear it apart to put in the new shafts......just bite the bullet and get it rebuilt...it will be less of a hassle

Oh...Im sorry I read that as input and output shafts NOT drive shafts sorry....yes if it is driveshafts then no tearing apart needed.
