I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500HD. 6.0 engine. The 4wd does not work. The fuse is good. When the buttons on the dash are pushed they will stay lit when switched to 4 lo, 4 hi etc. I can hear some activity in the transfer case when the buttons are pushed. I pushed 4 lo and drove a few hundred feet but it did not go into low gear. I do not hear any grinding and other nasty noises in the transfer case as I had on other Silverados when the transfer case went bad.

I have a basic scan tool and no codes come up and no service 4wd lights are on in the dash. No check engine light.

I originally thought it would be the front axle actuator but since it won't go into 4 lo I thought maybe the motor on the transfer case.

Anyway, as I get older I like to do as little exploring as possible and don't want to just start replacing parts. Any suggestions on tests I can do to narrow it down will be appreciated.
