Exclamation 2007 2500HD "Shift Range Inhibited"

Guys...need some help here. I have a 2007 Silverado 2500HD with the Duramax Diesel and Allison Transmission. This morning I went to back out of my spot and the dash displayed a "Shift Range Inhibited" message and the Check Engine light came on. Truck went nowhere, and "R" indicator flashed. Put truck back in park and checked owners manual, but could not find anything about this.
So I put in "R" and all was fine, except Check Engine light remains lit. Don't know if it was because of the cold (15F), but I have never seen this before and have been running this truck in the cold since new Dec 2006. Came home from work with no problems except the Check Engine light won't extinguish.
Now here's the rub. I am up in Montreal for work until this Friday 1/14 and then I am due to drive home about 360 miles to CT. I have called every shop in the Montreal area, but nobody can even look at it until next week at the earliest.
What do I do? Do I try to drive home and take my chances? I do have an appointment with my shop first thing on Monday am 1/17 back home, but that may be too late.
Any thoughts on what is causing this light and message?
thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would try disconnecting the batteries for a few minutes to see if the check engine code would reset. I have no ideas on why the transmission would act like that except the cold weather. Good luck.

Iltfish,
What dealer would you like to take your vehicle to? I would like to see what I can do about getting your vehicle checked out before your travel. Can you please email me with your VIN and current mileage as well?

I had to replace the electronic switch that the shift lever engage to under the plastic panel around the steering column. Both my 2002 Duramax and my 2003 Duramax. Same problem. Replaces in 15 minutes!
