Hi All, Ok Here goes, My G.F. has a 1996 1500 with a vortec motor that wont start. At first she was stuck at work and the truck would crank over but not start. She tried swapping out the fuel relay (I least I think she did )in the fuse block under the hood and that didn’t work. She said she didn’t hear the fuel pump hum with the key turned on and I told her to go under it and kick the tank and it started! Drove it home and figured the fuel pump was bad or intermittent . Sooo… I took the bed off and changed out the pump. Pumped turned on when the key engaged but the engine still wouldn’t start.. took the fuel line off at that motor and turned the key on and gas came out pretty good so I am getting fuel to the motor. Took a wire off and checked spark.. it was ok. It does have a “service engine soon” light on the dash so we hooked up a code reader and it said no codes found. Im not sure if the injectors are either not spraying or not getting any voltage to spray etc etc , haven’t checked that and not sure if that is it at all either.. kinda puzzled.. Help! J Any Ideas? you need to check the fuel pressure...that Vortec takes about 53 psi to get a nut...50 won't do it

 

How do I do that? i heard there is a schrader valve? if so can use an air guage or do I need a special tool? Also, is it maybe the fuel pressure regulator? and where would that be? thanks!!!

 

The regulator is under the intake.I don't think thats your problem.

Yes,a schrader valve...follow the steel fuel lines from where they hook up to the intake to the rear of the engine.

an a/c gauge will work on it

If thats not the problem what do you think it could be? is it possible that the fuel pump I put in was bad or the wrong one that puts put to low of pressure for a vortec? I havent changed the fuel filter yet and when I put a guage on it the it read only 15 psi.

sounds like you have the wrong pump...a tbi truck (88-95) ran about 15 psi

 

1996 50 + psi fuel pumps work much better than < 1995 15 psi pumps runs like a champ first crank!
