Default All Terrain Tires

I'm sure there are discussions on here about tires, but it's easier to get an active thread started than spending hours searching the site for previous dead threads.

So, I'm looking for new tires. The last 2 sets were BFG All Terrain TA's in 285/75-16. I would like to stick with them, but they are a LOT more expensive now than they were a few years ago when I bought the last set. I'm looking for suggestions/experiences with whatever tires you have.

I do mostly highway driving, but I do go out and play sometimes, so I want to stick with an all terrain tire. I live in the Pittsburgh PA area, so we get a little snow, and I travel up to Erie a few times a winter where they get a lot of snow.

Right now I'm leaning towards the General Grabber AT2. It has a decent look, similar tread pattern to my BFG's, and the price is good. Suggestions?

Don't have any experience personally, I can tell you the Grabbers seem to be a popular choice for our trucks as well as Toyota 4Runner owners. I traded in a 4Runner on my Silverado and used to hang out on a 4Runner forum.

Good luck on your decision and give us a review after about 500 miles.

Firestone Destination A/Ts are super nice tires. My dad has them on my 2wd 97 silverado, and that thing is unstoppable in the snow. They have a great ride, look and are pretty quiet. Overall a very nice tire, but I really don't have any real world experience as to how they compare to the BF ATs.

The cost of the tires is the total with mounting, valves, and balancing divided into the probable number of miles you will get with the tires before they need to be replaced. A set of tires with a 70K miles likely tread life are likely to be a lot cheaper in the long run than a set that is only likely to provide 40K miles.

Two tires that usually provide better tread life than the BFG tires are the Cooper Discoverer A/T 3 and the Michelin LTX A/T 2 tires. Costco often has great prices on Michelin tires. The MSRP is a lot lower for the Cooper tires.

You will probably get roughly the same MPG with the Cooper tires and better mileage with the Michelin's.

I went with the General Grabber AT2's. They are getting mounted today. I'll repost after I get some miles on them, and get a chance to get them dirty. Hopefully I'll get to try them out in the snow soon too.
