AWD
i know this is for a gmc but the chevy thread is hit more. anyways i have a 76 gmc 3500. im looking to drop a 572 into her, and i also want to turn her into an all wheel drive truck. now i dont know anything about all wheel drive. so what im asking is if i can put an AWD system out of another vehicle, say a jeep XJ, and have this work in my truck. i know the one out of a jeep wouldnt work but that was just my example. now also the 572 is running 750hp. would an AWD system be able to hyandle this much power? oh and this is a street truck. so handling with that power is important, thats why im looking for awd.
I don't know of any AWD that can handle that kind of power. They are just not made for it. Maybe you could use an old heavy duty tranfer case and run it in 4 high all the time, but then you are talking adding alot of weight. I would probably look at just finding a way to get traction the the rear wheels, like traction bars, wider tires, etc.
I agree with smoke, and if you found a AWD application to handle that much power, it would cost an arm and a leg! I would just run 4hi and 4low. That way you can have fun off-road, but take it to the track. There a cheaper ways to get your rear tires to grip in the rear than AWD. Let us know what you do and I'm anxious to see what kind of times you get at the track with that much hp.
if you go to turbotruck.net you will see a truck that pumps out over 1000 hp and 1100 ft/lbs of torque. its an 03 or 044wd 1500 reg cab short bed with a turbo ls6 and a stock 2500hd trans and transfer case. he now runs low 10s and launches in 4wd with slicks all around.
