I bought a very used 95 work truck (a couple of weeks ago) that has a 4.3 v6 and od automatic. here in the last couple of days, it has started to bog down and backfire when you give it too much gas. This happens a lot when I'm going up an incline at 60 -70 mph and putting a load on the engine and need to give it more gas to maintain speed. This also happens when trying to get up to speed from a stop. It has flooded out twice when starting it up in the morning. One guy told me that he thought I had an ingition issue (cap, rotor, wires), but I think I'm just getting to much fuel, as if the choke was not coming all the way off. In olden days, I would have thought that the choke pull off was bad, or maybe even the timing was retarded, or even the vac advance was bad.

Anyway, can you all give me some suggestions on how I should go about fixing this? If I can find my old timing light that hasn't been used in maybe 20 years, I'll check that, and the cap and rotor in the morning, but again, I don't think thats the problem.

like argon said chec the cap for carbon scoring, cracks, or accexive wear on the terminals. also be sure to check the rotor while the cap is off for excessive wear. if thats not the case check the resistance in your plug wires. I used to have a 4.3L V6 before this truck...i kept it goin on 370,000 miles on the origional engine...no rebuild or gasket repair or anything. then she bogged and spuddered. got a cap...nothing.....rotor...BINGO!

 

also replace the coil wire if there's any doubt there...
