box on the back of the air intake?

is the box on the back of the air intake boot the silencer. i have a 4.3 silverado and im trying to do some budget upgrades so if this is not a part i need, i wanna eliminate it.

It just adds volume to the intake system. It does act as a silencer. So taking it off would make the intake a little louder.
