Default Check engine codes

I heard that you can do something like pump the gas 10 times when the vehicle is off but the key is in the run position like when you reset your oil counter. Supposedly it will flash a code sequence at you or it will reset the engine light.Anyone know about this? My service engine soon light came on today. It came on yesterday and i checked it over and it was good and then it went off. It came back on today and it sucks.
Thanks for the help

I recently had my codes read while it was in the shop for new tires. I was there watching. No codes came up, despite the "service engine soon" having come on briefly (5-15 minutes each occurance) several times a few months ago. The tech said one or another code should have been reported. Any ideas why no codes appeared?

Just a plain jane 1999 ext cab Silverado, V6 4.3L, 5 spd manual with 92K. Original everything including wear and tear items -- the exceptions being tires, battery, and fuel and air filters. Oil changed per the dash light. No services except maybe in the first year or so. The truck would provide a good case study of a very minimally maintained Silvy.

I'm tempted at the moment to replace plugs, wires, cap, rotor, belts ... prompted by a wet weather problem that i described in another thread.

The cooling system has lost fluid since day off the lot in Nov 1999. A very, very small amount in the early years. The dealer said that there was a miniscule leak in some far away gasket, so I let it be. Over the past 18 months the coollant loss has picked up, but engine runs smooth, mpg is not suffering, and the exhaust is not colored. I don't know where the fluid is going, but it does not seem to be ending up on the pavement.
