guys i am very dissapointed in my truck i just drove to nebraska for work and was pulling a smaller single axle trailor 5x10 lightly loaded the drive was horrible. i couldnt go faster than 75 unless i stayed in my passing gear and it just felt like something was holding it back. and staying my passing gear just suck down the gas it cost me 300 dollars in fuel.i also pull a 5x10 haulmark loaded full of tools on a regular basis and it dont feel like that so any ideas or info will help thank you.

 

What truck do you have? Was the trailer an enclosed one? Some of those can be real parachutes back there.

You may need a higher gear ratio for pulling. But I don't know what exactly you are driving but a 5x10 trailer shouldn't lug it down as much as you are describing. Especially on the freeway (I take it you used them on your drive)

 

it could be an ext cab 4.3 v6 if a 5x10 was killing it.

info on the truck is needed!
a performance tune will help out alot, but you have to remember, the LS series motors in the newer trucks make their power higher in the rpm range so the will rev higher and the 4l60's like to hunt for gears.

like said above you may need a lower gear (higher numerically) but that could cost about $1800 for a 4x4

to give you an idea i have the truck in my sig with a 700lb 6.5x12 loaded down with about 2400lbs of stone easily cruised @ 60mph. the trailer was at its limit so i didnt want to press it any further.

Wow... I have a fair amount of experience towing box trailers/campers, and at 75 or more you are pretty much going to have drag/'something holding it back' w/ any gas job. If you really need to move that fast, you probably will want to look into a diesel unless you want real high gearing and 5-7 mpg's...

 

Shouldn't be going that fast anyways. But you will need to stay in the lower gears, I towed a smaller trailer with my truck (Stats below) and had to stay in the lower gears the whole way from NY to ND. It is normal. If you take your time and not drive 75 MPH then you can get decent, not great fuel mileage.

just to clear things up it is an 89 chevy silverado 5.7 4x4 cold air intake posi 3.73 rear end. And more than anything i was just complaining about it thanks for the input guys
