Default Dome light off with bed light on

I have a 2010 Sierra K1500 with plow and salter. My problem is that when I salt I need the cargo light ON for my helper to see to feed the salter BUT the way GM has the switch wired I have to drive with the interior dome light on!

Is there any way to be able to turn off the dome light and keep on the cargo light? As it is now when I turn the **** all the way clockwise to turn the bed light on, the dome light comes on and pushing the "dome off" rocker will not turn it off. Only when the cargo light is off will the "dome off" rocker work.

Why would GM design the switch so you can't control each light separately?

My 2008 Sierra is the same way. Yet, my 2000 Silverado has a separate switch for the cargo light.

I think on the new 2007 and up you'll need to do some rewiring and add a switch to get the cargo light to work without the dome light.
