dumped vs. regular exhaust
I have the 5.3 also with dumped exhaust. I would say it's just asthetics. although dumping the exhaust alows for a little more sound like an echo effect. Not in the cab but outside. Just all depends on the look you want plus its cheaper to dump it than pay for the extra pipe.
I have mine dumped and it sounds great and I noticed a significant performance increase. I have it unbolted and removed the cat-back from the truck to get rid of some weight. The old lady got all huffy 'cuz she could fall asleep as easy on trips, so I cut the old cat-back after the hanger and before the muffler and put it back on. I noticed it felt like I was towing 2,000lbs, so I took it back off.I'd say unbolt it and remove the old stuff.
Dumped is the term used when you just thow a downward curving pipe on the exit side of the muffler. The exhaust doesn't exit the back and you do not see any of the pipping. Any muffler shop you go to should know what you mean if you tell them this.
