Default EXAUST PIPE SIZE?

I've heard from a few different people that going too big on your exaust pipe will cause torque loss.
I ordered a Magnaflow w/3 inch in and out and obviously gonna run a 3inch pipe as well. Am pretty sure this will work well.

What size pipes are some of you guys running?

Any suggestions?

I'm gonna run a single pipe all the way through. Thats always worked pretty well for me. What size pipes are you running and did you feel any torque difference?

I've tried both Flowmaster and Magnaflow in the past and I dont know for sure but it seemed to me the Flows had the better sound, however, personally I seemed to notice better performance from the Magnaflow.

Was thinking about Gibson but no one I knew had any wish I had paid more attention to your signature, too late the Magna is in the mail.

Three inch piping will work just fine. That is what I have on mine and it does a fantastic job. I feel that Flowmasters provide a sound that is difficult to beat however, it is one of the worst mufflers if you are looking for performance. I don't care for the sound of Magnaflow's, but it is a better choice in performance than the flowmasters. With that said, I would go with Flowmaster just for the sound. We are talking maybe a 5-10 horsepower difference that you aren't going to feel. Take a look at the following muffler reviews and you can get a better sense of what to choose.

The results in HP order:
1.Flowtech Warlock (open) 374.2 hp/ 333.1 tq
2.Bassani Real Street 373.7 hp/ 333.8 tq
3.Hooker Maxflow 373.5 hp/ 333 tq
4.Borla XS 373.3 hp/ 332.6 tq
5.Magnaflow 372.8 / 332.5 tq
6.MAC 372.3 hp / 331.5 tq
7.Flowtech Afterburner 372.3 hp/ 330.1 tq
8.Hooker Aerochamber 372.1 hp/ 330.4 tq
9.Bassani 372 hp/ 333.5 tq
10.Spintech 371.6 hp/ 332.2 tq
11.Edelbrock Performer RPM 370.9 hp / 331.3 tq
12.Borla XR1 370 hp/ 334 tq
13.Flowtech Terminator 369.5 hp / 331.3 tq
14.Dynomax Ultra Flo 369.4 / 333.2 tq
15.Flowmaster 369.4 hp / 331.8 tq
16.Flowtech Warlock 366.3 hp / 325.3 tq
17.No muffs 365.2 hp / 330.1 tq

Ninety, I agree completely with Mark's post. A single 3" exhaust isn't really going to be robbing you of low end power.
Mark, have you seen or heard of Flowmaster's 10 series mufflers? They're on flowmaster's website under "race". I wasn't completely aware that they made so many straight through or 1 chamber mufflers until recently when I was educated on nastyz28.com !!!
Unfortunately, I have yet to get the soundclips to work, so you may find a soundclip on your own on sites such as youtube, google's video section, etc....

Hey man, I can personally tell you I have an 07 Silverado 4x4 with a 4.8L running 3 inch dual in dual out. This muffler is nasty loud at Wide open throttle and is decently loud at acceleration. At idle it to me is virtually non existent. I am very happy with my purchase. Cost me a pretty penny to have fabbed on but honestly I have had a flow master on another truck I had. I would do the magnaflow over again and again. Flowmaster sounds good but I feel it offered no real performance benefit.

I know this may not help you out, but I'm still on factory exhaust and it's dual 3" in and single 3" out. I know with a bigger motor I'm moving more air, but I've seen bigger pipes on trucks like mine before. The last half ton I had had 2.5" pipes and I think it was the standard 5.7 350 but I'm not posative.

I've got my exhaust dumped at the flange and it doesn't downshift going up some of the hills it used to. A lot more top end power, too.

Got the Magnaflow intalled today, am very happy with the noticable gains!

I did do a couple of things differently from the last Magna I bought:
1. Bought the muffler on the smaller side, 5"H x 8"W x18"L
2. Dumped the exaust in front of the axle w/turndown
The two things combined made a great difference in sound I can really hear it, theres no mistaking it's there.
The sound is sooo deep couldn't be happier. It's getting harder to stay off it!

Got th muffler from Jegs and install from a local shop for $159 all in, not too bad.

CAI is gonna be here tommorrow, it's gonna be a good weekend!

Thanks for the info and input
