Default Exhaust quesiton for a newbie

Hey guys, new member here. I have a question on the cheapest way to give my 97 GMC Sierra Z71 a good sound. It's completely stock with a 5.7L. I believe that my muffler has dual inlets. Money's really tight, as is the situation with a lot of people these days. I realize that I'm not going to get terrific sound without spending a decent amount of cash, but I'd like some rumble and for it to get a bit loud when I get into it. I'm not mechanically inclined, but I have a buddy who is and who'd be willing to help me with whatever I need. I've been trying to find out if maybe just replacing the muffler with a glass pack would give me what I want. Any recommendations? Part numbers, tips, or whatever you guys can throw my way would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

i would just replace the muffler with a flowmaster 40 series and have your friend weld it in for you. i replaced just the muffler on my fathers 03 and the sound was much more aggressive.

well do you want really loud or moderate?

if you want really loud go with 10 series which i have (i have sound clips if you want)
if you want good go with the 40

and its cheap too just hack off your old muffler and replace the old muffler with the flowmaster all you have to do is add pipe because stock mufflers are much longer

Well guys, I've got some good news! A guy at work is putting straight pipes on his truck and is offering to give me his old cherry bomb glass packs for FREE! On my truck, two pipes go into the muffler. So I'll be able to stick the cherry bombs right there. Now what's the cheapest/easiest way to route the exhaust out from the cherry bombs? The muffler location right now is on the passenger side where the cab meets the bed. It's a long bed standard cab truck, if that makes a difference in your recommendation. Thanks for the replies!

It depends on your local laws, some states require running it all the way to the rear of the vehicle. Indiana is a bit more lenient and doesn't have inspections so mine dump at a 45 before the rear axle.

How would I make that look decent? Any way I could pull it off dumping them both out the same side? I'd like to save money on pipe costs, but I don't want it to look goofy.

I think I've decided, for the sake of saving money, to not even worry about exits/tips and just dump the exhaust under the bed near the axle. I have two choices now -- I could use adapters and some of the existing 3" exhaust piping to cut up and extend from the glass packs toward the back, or I could go straight off the glass packs with the smaller piping the glass packs are made for -- I think 2.25". In terms of low end torque and sound, is there much of a difference in using 2.25" pipe and 3" pipe?

Yes the 3 inch will hurt your lowend torque. Go with the smaller diameter pipe. Are you sure that you have a dual inlet muffler? If so run each pipe into each glasspack adn dump it either before the axel or as I prefer it after the axel.
