Default Newbie with a question

Hi i am new to the forums so here is my first post.I currently have a 2001 silverado 2wd,lowered on 20" rims. This is my show truck but i need aquestion answered before i spend the money.I see all kinds of adds for exhaust that go from the y pipe in to a single. But has anyone done a true dual exhaust, splitting the y pipe and running 2 sets of mufflers and piping or will this throw a code, mabey why i only see the single in dual out.I do have a set of aftermarket shorty headers on now with stock y and cats with a mac performance exhaust. Will the true dual add any x hp or be a lil louder.Any help will be appreciated.

i would check with your states emission laws, in many states, adding true duals to a vehicle is illegal unless they came stock with true duals.

I've heard going with true duals on a vortec 350 is bad because it needs the backpressure from a single muffler for best performance. Is this true?

I have a 97 silverado with a 305 vortec. I had a true dual system put on it with 2.5” pipes, high flow cats and a pair of Flowmaster 40 series mufflers. As far as the legality, as long as you keep the sound at a reasonable level and meet emissions (by installing 2 catalytic converters) I think you’ll be okay. You only really have to worry about back pressure if you’re going to “dump” the exhaust. I recommend having side or rear exit to avoid valve warping. One thing I do recommend is having a cross pipe to balance the exhaust flow. Also keep in mind that unless you’re running a big block, having 2.5” pipe will keep the exhaust velocity high and your cylinders free of exhaust fumes.

Good Luck
