Default gas gauge

i have an 01 gmc sierra 1500 and the gas gauge is all wacky it goes form empty to what i have in the tank a couple of times each drive. i hear chevys have this problem to. i think its the sensor but i think the sensor and fuel pump are all in one. is there anything i can do to fix this? or do i need to buy a whole new one?. also do any of you know how long it will do this before it stops even reading or will it just do it forever?

Yeah its a very common issue. Its the fuel sending unit attatched to the fuel pump harness. You can order it seperate if you want and do it ur self. But if you have a shop do it, might as well get a whole new harness. For now just use your trip meter every time you fill up and how many miles you go. This does not mean your fule pump will go soon. They are seperate but together on the harness.
