Default gas guage problem

My 2000 ext cab 4.8l has a strange problem. When the guage is 3/4 or less it reads normal but if I fill it up it will register empty and the low fuel light will come on. This may last a few miles then it will change to 1/4 full then 1/2 full and back to empty , these are seemingly random events and not in that order. It may cange 2-3 times in a minute. Any ideas? Thanks

Sounds stupid butI think this is as simple as a bad ground. Had a friend with same problems and all it was, was a bad ground.
