Default Guidance

I have 5K to spend on a truck. It has to be a 4x4 and it has to have an extended cab. Other than that i have no real requirements. Never owned a truck before so i have no experience to draw from. I have looked at the Silverado FAQs.

MY specific questions are, with a budget of $5000, are there:

Any particular years to avoid? Any that are better than others?

Any particular engines/transmissions/drivetrains to avoid? Any to look for?

Thanks in advance for any info you folks are willing to pass on.

You should be able to find an 88-98 4x4 chevy or GMC with a 350 700R4 combo thats in real nice condition for that money. I'd just stay away from any 88's because they were the first year made and real prone to rust. Check around your local craigslist.

I would stay away from the V-6 though, nothing against it, its' just that there are no benefits.

Thanks for that info regarding rust probs on 88s...that is exactly the kind of info i am looking for. I was shying away from the v6.....seems like a small engine for a full size truck, especially if carrying a load.
