How big of a tire can I fit?
I just got my wife a 08 silverado 4X4. Im planning on just leveling out the front and putting some mud grapplers on 20" rims. Im just new to all of this because its her truck im just into fast cars. Point is I dont know how big of a tire i can fit without lifting it too much. I keep hearing this magic number of 33" tires. So I dontknow how the tire dimension would have to be.If i just go with a 33" will that basically just work out the dimensions to total out a33" tire? Will this rub? This is the tire that she liked. Will a set up like this work for me without problems? thanks in advancefor your help.

RE: How big of a tire can I fit?
I have a couple comments:
1) That tire will not fit. It's too wide. The Nitto is 12.5" wide. You can fit a 33" diameter tire under stock (or leveled)suspension, but it can only be about 11" wide. The tire size you are looking for in a 20" rim is 285/55R20. With the leveling kit, a 305/55R20 might fit, it's a little wider and a little taller.
2) I suspect your wife won't be driving the truck exclusively offroad, or even mostly off road. That tire will be super loud on the street, it doesn't ride or handle well either. It's not made to be driven on the road. It's call a Mud Grappler fora reason.
3) If you were to run that tire on the road you could almost watch the tread wearing off. Again, it's called a Mud Grappler for a reason. It's made for off road use, and running it on the street will jut wear it out, and be a waste of money.
I reccommend an all-terain tire. They have a more aggressive lug pattern so they look a little more beefy than a regular radial, theyhandle okay on or off road (not great at either, but a good compromise), decent tread-wear, and not too loud.

With the 305/55/20 its almost the same size as the stock tires according to the wheel calculator. im looking for an agressive tire but i guess i wont go for the mud grappler look. My wife wants an agressive looking tire not so much for dirt just for looks basically. searching around for tires with an agressive look i found the mickey thompson to have a more agressive look than the nitto's terra grapler but more price. Any more info on beefy looking tires?

The 305/55/20 nitto is 12.5" wide so how can i fit this tire if bfg112 just said i cant go over 11" on the width. Most of the tires are 12.5" wide. I found the coopers and they look nice but i saw that they have bad wear. I also ran into the dick cepek radial f-c ll but just like all the other tires all the width is 12.5". Are you guys sure this tire wont fit? what other tire can i use that will be less than 12.5"?

First of all, I believe the Nitto is over 33" tall. It is also over 12.5" inches wide. My Toyo 305/50 R20's are 12.2 inches wide and are a hair from rubbing. They are 31.9 " tall. Could maybe get away with another 3/4" of height but don't know a tire that fits that spec. I have 2.5" leveling and 3" lift blocks. If you want to go bigger, lift more. It's that simple.

Okay, here's a little lesson on tire size in case you don't know. The Nitto 305/55R20 is 12 inches wide (305mm converted to inches by dividing by 25.4 is 12 inches), and has a 6.6 inch sidewall (55% of 305mm is 167.75mm converted to inches is 6.6 inches). It's on a 20 inch rim, so the overall tire diameter is 33.2 inches (20 inches for the rim plus two times the sidewall dimension, 20 + 6.6 + 6.6 = 33.2).
Now, if your truck has stock suspension you probably don't want to go any wider than 11 inches. If you put a leveling kit on, you can probably get away with a 12 or 12.5 inch tire. I can't say for sure as I have stock suspension with 285/75R16 BFGoodrich All Terrain TA's.
Everything said isassuming your rims have the same backspacing as the factory rims. Less backspace means you can fit a wider tire, but then you start to run into the problem of the tire sticking out past the wheel wells. If you want to get crazy and put a 13 inch tire on, you can do it with the right rims, but the tires will stick out and look rediculous and be illegal in most states.
The BFG tires I have look more aggressive than a stock tire, but not much. If you want more aggressive than that you can go with a Pro Comp Xtreme A/T. That's a beefy looking tire that will still ride okay on the street, and it comes in 305/55R20.

I have a 2.5 inch front leveling kit on my 2008 Silverado. I am riding on 285-65-18 nitto terra grapplers. They look and ride great. I think in inches they are near 33. I was told 305-50-20s would fit ,but I'd lose height. These are only 285s and are really wide.
