Intermediate shaft clunking
I am in no means a mechanic but i read in here that under the hood, i believe on the steering shaft, i can unbolt1 15MM bolt, and simply redistribute the existing grease by moving the 2 shaft halves back and forth. Would adding new grease to the shaft when its apart, help at all or not? I bought the truck about a year ago (2003 w/ 80,000 miles now), and i checked and they replaced the intermediate shaft under warranty shortly after it was new i believe. Any trick to the trade of doing the job as a non mechanic? Thanx for any replies, Jim
there is a new, greaseless shaft...19563514,or something like that..that is the cure long term...its not a bad price for 90 bucks list..most dealers will sell it for about 78 bucks.
your shaft...yes,redistributing the grease will quiet it for awhile, but it will be back.
simply take that pinch bolt out and stroke your shaft (insert sex joke here) about 15 times in and out then bolt it back up...BUT..MAKE SURE YOUR STEERING WHJEEL DOES NOT ROTATE OUT OF POSITION...IT MUST GO BACK EXACTLY WHERE IT WAS...if its rotation is off, you'll destroy your airbag coil.
cauition...truck may smoke after shaft-stroking
