Knocknig noise 6.0 vortec?

Knocknig noise 6.0 vortec?
I have a 2000 Silverado 2500HD with a 6.0 Vortec v8 with 124,000 Miles on it and it has started to make a knocking noise like its low on oil but it is not everyone i ask about thistells me its carbon build up but i dont see how it is making that much noise just from carbon? Does anyone else have this probblem?
