Cool A little help on a sterring gear box

Hey guys,
I need a little help...I have a 1998 GMC Sierra C1500 2WD 305 5.0 I just bought about 2 weeks ago and the steering has about 5"of play in it, I'm going to replacing the steering gear box.

My Question is: Do I also have to replace "I guess it would be the steering shaft" as well or just the gear box?
And when the truck is off with the key turned forward I can twist the shaft with both hands and the wheels don't move...is that normal?

Thanks,
Luckee13

Wow !!! 5' of play !!! That sure must make it difficult to drive. Yeah just the steering gear box.
Are all of your inner and outer tie rods OK ??

Hey Glen, Thanks for the reply.
Man it's killer on the "nerves" but Yes everything looks good but the gear box...I don't see any leaks though.

Just swap out the gear box. My old truck had just over half a turn of play in it when i bought it. Bubi ended up rebuilding the entire steering on that truck.
