Long tube or shorties on headers.

Which are better and are the long tubes worth having to go to a exhaust shop to have them put in?

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

I have always heard of long tube headers working extremely well on the LS-1 F-Body.. Since its basically the same engine I would assume that they would work very well on our trucks... About the install, you can always give her a go with the old mig welder.. I would, just to save the money.. My welds arent exactly pretty all the time, but they work and they are cheap.. Now are you trying to run your headers to your cats or are those out of the question. I know in CA they dont want anybody changing the position of the cat , so we cant get long tubes out here and stay legal.. Kind of a bummer, but it sure is one hell of a beautiful state and I would like to keep it that way. ok.. back on topic.. I think the Long tube headers will give you more power for the buck even if you were to go to a shop and have them do the install.. Make sure you get equal length headers too.. Also a big deal, more bang for the buck.. Good luck, at least your header bolts arent rusted and you gotta drill em out!

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

Some long tube kits out there have a matching Y-pipe that has the flange that will bolt directly to your cat-back, which means, you won't have to get it done at a shop, you could do it in your driveway.

Long tube kits with a y pipe? How about some shorties with a y pipe to my gibson st exhaust. I need my cats in CA...

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

shorties are about the same as manifolds, so if the exhaust in proper location should fit right up

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

Some longtube kits do have Y-pipes with cats on them... Dunno if you have to have the cats in the factory location in CA. or not... You might be able to find a kit with a CARB number...

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

that would be sweet but I need the cats in the factory position.. I bet you can guess what phrase really burns me up....

Is that one of those thing kinda like the new gun i just bought says its not legal in california. That must suck to have to follow all the rules.

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

My friend. There are a lot of things that Im not SUPPOSED to have in CA.. take my AR-15 for example.. CA law says that im not supposed to have detachable magazines with a pistol grip.. or a collapsable stock with a pistol grip.. however, every single piece of my gun was bought in CA legimatly.. FFL'd and everything.. Now.. My gun doesnt get inspected every 2 years either.. Bikes dont get inspected either, its all go on those 2 wheeled demons.. Anyways.. What kind of gun did you buy.. or a better question yet.. Whats your aresonal like? I got a couple 308's (remmington 700 LTR, CZ 550, and an old mossberg), 10/22, Springfield custom 1911(tricked out), mossberg 500, AR-15 w/ aimpoint M2 (from downrange in Iraq) and m73 surefire quadrail foregrip, AR-15 w/ iron sights & knights arms quad rail foregrip, HK USP 45, SIG PRO, HK P2000, another springfield 1911 (stock), glock 17 and im workin on getting a SW500 just for kicks.. ok.. that got way off topic.. but i think its a good one..

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

I've got a Colt 1911 Combat Target model with Cocobolo (sp?) grips that is all tricked out and once owned by Jerry Miculik, a Russian AK 47 with a folding stock, a Mossberg 590 Persuader with 8+1 a heat shield and an aquired M9 bayonet attached, a Ruger P345 with a stainless slide and the rail, a Charles Daly automatic 12 ga, a S&W 686plus .357 magnum with the 7 shot cylinder, a Ruger P97D, a Ruger 10/22 with the long stock, a few 870's, a MRI .308win. with the carbon stock, aWalther p22 with a 5" barrel, a Taurus .22 with the 10 shot cyl., an old double barrell side by side 12 ga., an old 10 ga. single shot, a Bersa .380 for the Mrs., and I know I'm missing something....

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

Very nice Mr. LM7.. In a couple of years I would like to expand my horizons and get a FFL.. that would be sweet.. I tried so hard to get a AK-47 when I was in Russia.. Its a lot harder than you would think.. Granted I was in uniform the whole time.. Getting it back to the ship would have been a biotch too.. Anyways.. You knwo what makes me mad? the little cylinder that houses the detent thing on my 1911 for the safety is loose.. it makes rebuilding the gun a mofo.. anyways.. take 'r easy.. I gotta go to work and play with satellites...

You need to... The .357 is my favorite round to shoot. I just wish someone could build an auto that used it... The only thing I've seen out there is the Desert Eagle... F*ck that.

RE: Long tube or shorties on headers.

Both are good setups, long tubes will give you more hp and shorties should give you more torque. Just depends on what you are trying to do, high end speed or low end grunt. I hear the new edelbrock ss are a real nice set of headers.
