on the 99-06 trucks with the locking thing, i would think its highly unlikely that someone would steal it.
i know mine is under there, rusted in.
and on many of our trucks (especially ones bought used), the spare usually isnt worth stealing due to its bald tread or small size. mine is dry-rotted, low on air, and small(245/75-16).

i wonder if i should take it off since it doesnt serve much of a purpose and i just got new tires?

Well, the thought that perhaps someone stole it did cross my mind. I live in such a low crime area though, that I kinda doubt that's what happened.
I went out and looked at the cable again and it looks like it was just really frayed out. If it was a clean cut, then I know I'd be looking at thieves. (Then I'd go looking for them)

Sorry to cause a panic wave. I do just feel incredibly stupid for not checking to make sure I even had a spare when I bought the damn thing.

Oh, just for the hell of it, has anyone ever painted their stock rims? I'm thinking that I'm gonna just go ahead and do that when I change over to 285/75s. W00t!

Thats a good idea might be better to powder coat them. But cheaper to paint them yourself I wish I could try that but i need to drive my truck every day.

Yes, that's my little puppy. His name is Max and he's an Alaskan Malamute.

Powder coating the rims is more pricy than two cans of black spray paint. I'm all about the 'Budget Build' if you catch my drift.

I just hope 285s fit on the stock wheel. (Crossing fingers)

Don't know what year you have, but I have an 05' with 285/70/17s that fit with no problem.

Lever assembly? I'm not calling into question your knowledge or experience, but I didn't see squat under there aside from the broken/clipped cable.

I'll go take a look sometime later.

I have a 95... Most of you guys are all rocking 04+. Maybe it's different between the two.

Really frayed could mean a dull hacksaw maybe?

It could have been jammed and they cut it off a long time ago and the owner might have just thrown it in the garage or something.
