Default MAF: descreen, jet, or granatelli

The mod list for my 01 1500 with 5.3 includes CAI, hypertech III, magnaflow cats, and IMCO exhaust (I like a quite truck as I hunt alot). Still looking to increase MPG, and a little mor HP never hurts. Most folks suggest the next stepp is a high flow MAF sensor. My question is:

1. Do I just descreen the existing and clean the sensor? I hear the aftermarket sensors are calibrated for taking advantage of the greater airflow, where as the existing ones don't recognize the increase. I've also read that the screen is there to reduce turnulent airflow, but I'm not convinced that the air filter doesn't do most of the work.

2. Go with a Jet brand MAF? I have heard nothing but good things about them, but they don't advertise as greater percent increase in airflow as the Granatelli's and don't even mention increased MPG.

3. Granatelli- I've heard mixed reviews. They are fairly expensive, but their "advertised" HP and MPG gains are impressive?

your thoughts?

go aftermarket if you have the money, they actually increase hp. removing your screen only improves throttle response... as for jet vs granatelli, i can't help you there

Actually, most of the guys I've talked to about the Granatelli said it was the exact same inside diameter and also came with the stupid screen in place like the OEM MAF. I talked to one guy who actually bought one and he told me he couldn't tell a difference. I would just descreen the OEM MAF and leave it be. I descreened mine and you can only tell the difference at wide open throttle but you might as well. Just be careful not to hit the sensor wires.

I heard for most vehicles its a waste of money. The only way to make them work is either put them on a highly modified motor with a tune, or have a dyno tune done on your truck with something like a HP tuner. They need dialed in or they are useless. Most programmers and tunes can't make 100% use of them without a dyno.

isn't that true of just about every bolt on mod though? it doesnt work to its potential without a tune?
