Do mud flaps/ slash guards really work? Don't they sisify a truck? Are they worth installing?

The only people I get coming in O'reilly Auto Parts looking for Mud Flaps are really old farts. Personally I find them extremely distasteful.

Ok im not trying to be mean here, but all you guys who live down south dont need them like people up north do. Every other year i get new rocker panels casue they rust out so bad from the rocks, sand, salt, ****ty road conditions from up here, potholes the size of a small houses you go through throw up huge rocks, i have mud flaps, but there not huge and i think they look pretty good, and they def. help my truck. So if you need them, get them

Functionality: Yes they definately work. And if your interested in them solely for the purpose of protecting the truck then do whatever man. It's your truck.

Looks: Well you already have my opinion.

Uh, in my defense I only had that car for like 2 months. The only body modifications I made to it were destructive to include:
The foam spoiler ripping off going down the highway and warping the metal on the hatch.
And!
Raking the driver's side across my mail box while backing it outta the yard in the dark.

If you ever plan on getting anywhere near gravel I would put them on. If nothing but pavement leave them off.
