Default Need advice for cat converter replacement/removal

I just had my computer checked to see which code was setting off the "Service Engine Soon" light.

Its the catalytic converter and I do not want to replace it. They are very expensive...a stock replacement from GM parts direct will cost you around $500. Aftermarket replacements are not much better.

So, I'm cutting it off. I'm a poor, broke *** 5th year college student who spends all of his money on wild women and alcohol.

For the time being, If i remove the converter and leave the oxygen sensor will the truck still run ok? I have heard that the 5.3 will spit and sputter.

Oxygen sensor simulators are getting harder to find, so I guess getting the oxygen sensor tuned out would be the best answer.

Somebody give me some advice. BTW, there are no emission inspections in TN...all I need to be able to do is pass a mirror test and I can take care of that.

I fixed the problem today and I thought it would be a good idea to share it with everybody for future reference.

The engine was missing a little bit-I had suspected that it was a faulty plug wire that was obliterated from changing plugs a couple months ago. I replaced my stock plug wires with MSD 8.5 mm plug wires. Holy ****! She purrs like a kitten now. Hasn't missed a lick yet. The SES light even went away.

I dare say I feel a slight difference in power but I always have trouble with it all being in my head.

The moral of the story-

If you get a bad converter code from your computer, check your coil packs, plugs, and plug wires. If your ignition isn't working properly you're clogging your converter up with way too much unburned fuel.
