Need help
I have a 1987 Chevy V10 4x4. I just finished installing a 4in. lift kit and the last thing I need to do is replace the factory steering arm with the drop steering arm. it connects to the drag link via ball joint and castle nut and to the knuckle via 3 7/8 in. pressure crimp nuts. I disconnected all the nuts and the drag link but still cannot seem to loosen it from the knuckle. I have soaked it in PB Blaster and heated it up with an acetylene torch while hammering around the bolts.
How in the h**l do you take the steering off? Please help! this is the last step to my lift kit. thanks, Blake! |
Wow !!! I just took mine apart a few weeks ago, cause the rear knuckle on the drag link had too much play in it.
I loosened the castle nut off until it was at the end of the threads, With a ball peen hammer resting evenly on the castle nut and stud I gave the small ball peen hammer a good hard swift hit with a second heavier hammer. |
I got that part off. I need to take off the whole steering arm from the knuckle. Its the horseshoe shaped chunk of metal that turns the wheel.

Pitman arm puller. Coming off the steering box right?
|

You're talking about this right?
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/a...1&d=1287347106 I'd use a puller, or air hammer on the end of the stud. Heck, the pitman arm puller might just work. That or get the thing on the far right of this picture: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...4L._SY300_.jpg V10 has a full front axle, right? Not a cheesy "differential + CV axles" type deal? |
The Drag Link attaches to that U shaped component you posted a picture of above and it (Drag Link) attaches to the pitman arm which inturn attaches to the steering box.
As I posted earlier. You can back off the castle nut then use a hammer. Or use a knuckle puller. |
