Good morning all,

Ok... so I hope in my truck (2000 Silverado 1500 Stepside 4.3L)this morning to go to work. I press the brake to switch gears into reverse to back out of the driveway and I notice...the odometer (blue light/electronic version) goes dim. I'm thinking maybe it was something with the headlights/running lights switching, so I don't pay it any mind.

I make my way down the road and come to my first light, so I apply the brake, and again...the odometer goes dim. So now I know there is an issue. I turn on the left flasher as I'm at a turn and the odometer starts flashing a like the turn signals...

I can't look at the truck until later as I just got to work, so I'm wonder if anyone has encountered this situation before and might be willing to point me in the right direction. It's getting dark here early (I live in Connecticut), so I want to make the few hours of daylight after work count.

The first thing I would check is the battery and alternator. Make sure they are good,the alternator is putting out, and all cables are clean and secure. If they are fine it sounds like a ground issue. There should be a spot under the dash on the drivers side where there are some ground terminals connected. Make sure there aren't any loose or broken. I am not sure where all the ground spots are but there are usually one or two grounding the cab to the frame, engine to the frame, and battery to the engine and/or frame. Good luck!

 

Alternator and battery are good as I had them checked due to winter coming. Another thing I forgot to mention. All turn signal and brake lights on the outside of the truck work fine. The odometer blinks with the brake lights, turn signals, and hazards.

Flasher??

 

So I just went to lunch in the truck and noticed. The Odometer gets dim when the brakes are applied. It gets dim/bright in a flashing pattern if the hazards are actived. If the left signal is applied it stays constant bright. If the right signal is activated it gets dim/bright in the flashing pattern of the signal....

 

Still nothing on this one guys. Problem only happens when the truck automatically turns the daytime running lights on. To remedy the problem I've been turning the headlights on with switch. Any ideas are appreciated.
