Question Oil Change Indicator

I'm new on this board----maybe ya'll can help with a question.

I just got a 2006 Sierra and have changed the oil once. I understand that it had been serviced right before I bought it---the change oil indicator came on around 4500 miles.

Does anyone know exactly how it figures out when to come on? Is it time, mileage or does it actually vary depending on driving conditions. If that is the case, does anyone have any technical info on what it's measuring?

Thanks!!

my 02 oil change light, seems to come one every 7000 or so miles. I figured it was set at the recomended milage. I wonder if your's was not reset after it was last changed?

I think it is determined by engine oil temp and how hard the motor works.

my friends 05 has it. we changed the oil and immediately afterwards pulled a 11000lb backhoe not too far and it read 95% oil life. so I would say its pretty accurate, more than most think.
