Silverado Oil Change Interval

Silverado Oil Change Interval
My 2005 4.8 Silverado has a 3000 mile oil change interval as specified in the owners manual IF the auto oil change indicator is reset etc. I have had two Jeep 4.0 straight six vehicles whose owners manuals reccomended a 7000 mile interval for optimum conditions, i.e. not to much stop & go and dirt roads etc.. I alway changed the oil at 5000 and still have one that doesn't burn oil at 185,000. It leaks oil, but doesn't burn oil.
My question is if the auto oil change system is relied on, what interval are other owners getting? Is it around 3 thousand or higher. With all the advancements in oil & engines, 3 thousand seems a little low these days.
Also the manual specs ONLY 5 W-30 oil, anyone know the reason for this? What happened to the other weights; 10W-40 etc.?
Regards,
Randy, Las Vegas
Any input would be helpful.

RE: Silverado Oil Change Interval
I have never gone past 3k, auto light or not. The fact is I have never seen any light telling me I need to change oil. I add a quart of duralube every other oil change as well. Even wil the new 5k and 15k oils, I'd never let any oil stay in my truck or any of my cars past 3k. Just me bro.

RE: Silverado Oil Change Interval
I'm with makoltd on this one, I have a 2006 Z71 and I take it off road a lot so i like to keep the oil nice and fresh. When you do change you oil look at it when it comes out that would be a good indicator to see if it does need changing, if it only looks a little worn when you first change it maybe you could go a few more miles just to save some money in the long run on oil and filters. My 2 cents.

I just got a 2006 Sierra and have changed the oil once. I understand that it had been serviced right before I bought it---the change oil indicator came on around 4500 miles.
Does anyone know exactly how it figures out when to come on? Is it time, mileage or does it actually vary depending on driving conditions. It that is the case, does anyone have any technical info on what it's measuring?
Thanks!!

The way I understand it is the oil change thingy goes by the engine revolutions... some one will correct me if I am wrong, but I always change mine at 5,000 miles and my oil life indicator always says about 33% oil life left... hope this helps.
