Default overhead console space for ... ?

I have a 2002 1500 Ext Cab with an overhead console. There's an opening which is "capped off" in the front.

What did the factory put in there?

My dads 02 and my 06 are not capped off, but I do know that some of the SUVs have AC controls for the back of the cabin.

It would be interesting to see what is behind there, that is the first one Ive seen capped.

I have seen then capped before. And when we uncapped the one in my friends truck to our surprise there was not a dam thing, but an empty hole...lol Yeah why did the factory cap it off? And where can I get one of those caps, the dealership looks at me like I ma crazy when I ask about one. My wife likes to put stuff up there and it falls out... how annoying....

My 2001 Silverado also has a little storage area there. I keep my garage door opener up there. I'm pretty sure that space is for a little information center (direction, outside temp, fuel milage etc.) if you opted for all the bells and whistles.

That makes sense - thanks. Anyone have one and could share a pic?

Anyone else add something interesting there? Any pics? I was thinking about putting a GPS in that spot ...

A GPS could work, the space is kinda limited for that tho. And it's not easy to look up there while you are driving. I have Sirius radio with the suction cup mount to the windshield. I was thinking about trying to fab up something to put the Sirius reciever there.

Lots of great ideas to put something custom in there - but seriously guys, is there really a factory purpose for this thing? Anyone have any factory options installed there? Or was it truly just a place to have something custom installed?
