I'm pretty sure that space is for a little information center (direction, outside temp, fuel milage etc.) if you opted for all the bells and whistles.

Gotchya. The only time I've seen one is when my dad was buying his truck. We looked at one that had a little info deal up there. I looked for pics online, but couldn't find any.

and on mine, the degrees and direction is on the mirror, and the trips are in the dash, i think it is just an extra storage, nothing more.

my 04' is open,just a cubby hole, i put sunglasses up there. mine kind of has a lip on it so the stuff can just fall back out.
