Default Parking Brake

I have a 2004 GMC Sierra. I have the rear disc brakes, not the drums. I was going to tighten up the parking brake cable, but it has all the adjustment take out of it. Is there another way to tighten up the parking brake so the truck holdes? I heard the parking brake shoes could be adjuted like regular ol drum brakes. Is this true?

On the 1500 models there is a star wheel adjustment to the shoe. You have to remove the wheel and caliper etc to get to it. The Chilton and Haynes manuals show it. To remove the shoe there is a screw and clip at the bottom. Good luck.

Default Parking brake

I had a 2001 GMC, and the parking brake would not hold on the state inspection. I tried to adjust the cable as you did and no joy.

I pulled the drum/rotor and the drum was worn (deep groove), so replaced the drum and a new shoe. I got my parts at OReilly's. You can purchase just one parking brake shoe. They don't come in sets. Cost about $60.

Good luck,

Yes these trucks have a parking brake drum inside of your brake rotor. They are regular old drum brakes and are adjustable. I suggest you pull your rear rotors off and adjust/clean/inspect the parking brakes. The friction material also tends to unglue its self when the parking brake is never used, so keep an eye out for that.

I'd say adjust the drum portion and then adjust the cable.
