question about tire size and lift

if i get a 3" suspension and a 3" body on a 2wd truck, can i clear 35" tires? because i have a buddy with 5" on a 4wd and his 35s rub pretty bad... if i cant get 35s how big can i go without rubbing?

What year is your buddy's truck? I have a 05' with no lift or adjustment, and 33" fit with no issue. but I have 4wd, so that may make a difference.
